Bio-Containment at Herston

The Herston Medical Research Centre located at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Queensland, features a Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) facility. Such a laboratory requires the highest standards of bio-containment to prevent transmission of contaminants into or out of the space. This has been achieved by the use of Sealeck High bio- containment Inflatable Seal Doors constructed within the PC4 standards and a Decontamination Chamber coupled with a fully controlled fumigation and exhaust system. These bio-containment doors feature unique inflatable seals and a seamless stainless steel finish. They are operated by a complex control system that ensures safe transfer of goods or people whilst preventing leakage of fumigant to the surrounding Laboratory. The flush finish enables easy passage whilst maintaining the safety of a full seal and locking function when required. The Sealeck Group’s bio-containment doors have also met the requirements of research facilities such as Westmead Millennium Institute in Brisbane (current leaders in Australian Bird Flu research) and the SARS research facility in University of Hong Kong by providing doors to BSL4 specifications. Bio-containment doors made to BSL4 specifications are designed to meet the most stringent conditions of absolute containment and can feature electromagnetic locking and a computer access control system. Sealeck are at the forefront with these developments in bio-containment and tailor their door and window products to the needs of the individual project.
